Leadership: Church Staff

In addition to Pastor Mark Peterson, Bethlehem is truly blessed with a wonderful, energetic and compassionate staff. They are able to teach, assist, enable and encourage us to live out our calling, “Blessed to be a blessing.”

Nancy Tiff, Office Coordinator

s 2015 NancyTiffAs office coordinator, I joined the staff of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in August of 2004. Along with primary duties of office administration and management, I must coordinate building use for two congregations, Bethlehem and Light of Christ, and for various outside groups that use our facility.

I absolutely love my job here at Bethlehem and the people with whom I work. Every day is different and challenging as I keep up with council and a multitude of projects. The fellowship we share is one of the best things about Bethlehem; there’s something for everyone. Family is very important to me, and Bethlehem is a family church.

ab s dk nt 2015 halloween IMG 0284In addition to my managerial responsibilities, keeping an eye on our senior population is a ministry I especially enjoy. This probably stems from my teenaged years working at a local care center. Our elders have stories and history that they need to share and we need to hear.

While I consider my roots are in Nebraska, I moved here with my family when my dad retired from the Air Force in 1971. I married Jim, a handsome local young man, and together we raised our son, Jake. We’ve worshipped at Bethlehem for many years.

Deaconess Kristen Baltrum, Director of Faith Formation

s 2015 KristenBaltrum104Greetings! I am Deaconess Kristen, or “DK” here at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. In the Lutheran Church, the office of Deaconess is a Ministry of Work and Service where someone uses his/her God-given gifts, talents, abilities and passions to serve God’s people. My gifts, talents, abilities and passions are for passing on the Christian Faith from one generation to the next. I believe every person of every age has a role to play in Faith Formation. I find great joy when I see older adults intently listening to young children talk about their Sunday school lesson, or when adult Mentors and Confirmation Students become part of each other’s families.

I have a B.A. in Theology from Valparaiso University and am consecrated to the Lutheran Deaconess Association. I have been serving Youth Ministry in various ways since 1993, having more and more fun as my work goes on. I completed my Masters in Children, Youth and Family Ministry through Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2009.

My husband Rob and I, with our children (JR and Maddie), have been living in Longmont for 14 years. We are originally from the western suburbs of Chicago. We love Colorado and find Longmont an amazing place to raise kids, enjoy the outdoors, and be an active part of the local community. Bethlehem Lutheran is really a “faith home” for us, not just the place where I happen to work.

When I am not at the church building, I am volunteering in the Rocky Mountain Synod Faith Formation Network or participating as secretary for the Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp Board of Directors. I also enjoy hanging with my kids (read: driving them places) and I enjoy any kind of water sport, reading or home-brewing with Rob.

Jamie Jurkovich, Sunday School Program Coordinator and Communications Coordinator

s 2015 jamie111Hello! I have the privilege of working with the youngest members of our congregation. I consider that to be a great honor as well as a great responsibility. The roots we put down in childhood play an important role throughout our lives and are particularly influential to the shape our faith takes. My hope is that the children at Bethlehem are nourished in a healthy faith environment that is steeped in safety, grace, and love. I believe that, as adults, our example teaches our children much more than anything we say, and we are blessed to have many lovely examples of graciousness, faith, and wisdom in our community.

I became interested in child development after the birth of my oldest daughter, Viviana. Mostly because it became quickly apparent that I really didn’t have a clue what I was doing. Since that time, I’ve been on a journey of learning and growing into a mother, and it has been the most rewarding, difficult, and world-opening experience of my life. Most days are humbling, but always with a twist of amazement, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

My educational background is in language arts. I earned my B.A. in English from Fort Lewis College in Durango and my Master’s degree in English Education from the University of Colorado in Boulder. I’ve taught at the middle school and high school levels, as well as worked in publishing and editing.

ff ss jj 2015My husband, Aaron, and I are Colorado natives, and have understandably never been able to gather the nerve to leave this beautiful state (even though the ocean is sometimes tempting). We have two daughters, Viviana and Louisa, who have sparkle to light up any room. We are enjoying introducing them to our lovely mountains, and they are becoming pretty competent little hikers.

Not too surprisingly, I’m big on reading and thoughtful conversations. For me, there’s also nothing quite like getting a new stamp in my passport. I adore decadent food (oh mustard crème sauce, you complete me!). I’m trying to become a gardener, but it’s still very much a work-in-progress.

Oh, and I love gnomes. Smile

Worship Coordinator and Music Director: Brenda Harris

BLC BRENDAI am delighted to be here at Bethlehem Lutheran as your Worship Director! I come to you, originally, from Tucson, Arizona, where I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance with a minor emphasis in Vocal Performance from the University of Arizona.

I grew up in the rich musical tradition of the Southern Baptist church, where I began playing for services when I was 13. Since that time, I served as pianist, organist, choir director, and worship leader in Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches, as well as a Reform synagogue. When asked by one pastor, "Well, just what are you?" I had to respond, "I'm a musician!" God's love manifests itself in music and I am blessed to have worked in this wonderful profession all of my adult life.

In addition to church work, after obtaining my teaching certification, I worked in the publicBLC BRENDA 2 schools, teaching general music, piano lab, choir, and drama. My students ranged from preschool to senior high, with my particular favorite being middle school students. I look forward to working with the children and youth here at BLC.

I have two lovely daughters, Valerie (31) who lives in Phoenix, Arizona and Miriam (17), who is a senior at Silver Creek High School and lives with me in central Longmont.

I am grateful to join your family here at Bethlehem Lutheran.

If you enjoy singing or play an instrument, please consider joining one of our musical groups. I would love to hear from you and answer any questions you might have (brenda@bethlehem-lutheran.net or 303-776-3290). Thanks and blessings to you!

Ray Leake, Pianist

 ray

As a professional musician, I have shared my talent and love of music with Bethlehem for several years now. Before coming to Bethlehem, I played at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church for 26 years.

s 2015 RayAtPiano 2I have written several piano/organ arrangements for Bethlehem’s Christmas and Easter services as well as a Jazz Gospel service. Held twice a year on Pentecost and All Saints Day, Jazz Gospel includes a seven-piece Dixieland Band and offers both an uplifting experience and a joyous celebration.

My "real" job consists of teaching private piano lessons, playing with and writing arrangements for several bands, writing orchestral arrangements that have been performed by the Jefferson Symphony, and frequent gigging.

Linda Ferguson, Nursery Coordinator

Southern California is where I was born, raised, and educated. Jim, my husband of 45 years, and I have three grown children and three amazing grandkids. Brian, wife Chanda, and children Brenden, Bricen and Chaela live in Texas; Matthew and wife Yvette live in California; and Katie and husband Michael live in Longmont.

In our spare time we like to travel with family. Anyplace near, on, or by the water is my joy.

We came to Longmont for Jim's job in 1996 and joined Bethlehem soon after. In 1999 the late Pastor Steve Cox asked me to help with and set up a church nursery. I agreed and have never looked back. While I have an official title, to the little ones I'm known as Miss Linda, the Fish Lady, as Goldfish are an expected snack in the nursery.

I have taught special education for over 40 years and truly love it. My mission for the nursery is that all children, young or old, feel happy, safe, and loved from the moment they enter the nursery doors to the time they depart.

I can’t run the nursery by myself and am grateful for the assistance of Lauren Abromski and Morgan Abromski, both CPR certified, who have been nursery staff themselves for over 14 years combined.

Please feel welcome to stop by the nursery located off the parish hall and check us out. We specialize in HUGS!

You can reach Linda by calling the church office (303-776-3290).
