Middle school and confirmation: grades 6-8

ff WritingHandBible 1Confirmation Ministry at Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a three year ministry program for youth in grades 6, 7 and 8. Over the three years, they will study the Ten Commandments, the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer, the Old and New Testaments of scripture and cover topics relevant to living a life of faith in current times. Students meet on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings throughout the school year. Additionally, each Confirmation Student is assigned an adult Mentor who walks alongside them for the entire three year period. The Rite of Affirmation of Baptism is traditionally celebrated in worship at the end of the 8th grade year for those who wish to affirm their faith.

Confirmation 2016-2017

ff ms girls3Confirmation classes for our 6th–8th graders will start in September. We will again be using the colaborate curriculum. Pastor Peterson and Bob Lee will be teaching the Wednesday night class, which will cover the New Testament. Sarah Loberg and Deaconess Kristen Baltrum will be leading the Sunday morning class, "Lutheran Living."

  • Confirmation Orientation: Wednesday, September 7, 7:00 p.m. We will go over the calendar year, talk about curriculum and expectations and answer any questions. This is for parents, grandparents and confirmands.
  • First Sunday Class: Sunday, September 11, 9:15–10:10 a.m. in the Youth Room
  • First Wednesday Class: Wednesday, September 14, 7:00–8:00 p.m. in the Youth Room
  • Plans are in place for another full year of Confirmation ministry for our sixth through eighth graders.

The Sparkhouse curriculum colaborate challenges students to think theologically and ask deep questions about the Bible, Lutheran history and their lives as people of faith. These adolescent years often mark a new phase in their faith formation, one in which they start thinking about what they believe and why they believe it. We want to be a part of this formative time.

Confirmation Ministry at Bethlehem also includes two retreats, our Mentor Ministry, service projects and fellowship events.

Mentor Ministry

The Mentor Ministry of Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a cross-generation ministry in which one adult in the congregation is assigned to one confirmation student. This adult agrees to pray for that student daily, contact them weekly and get together monthly. Monthly events are coordinated by Deaconess Kristen. Additional times of getting together outside of programed activities are on student-mentor basis and agreed on by the student's parents. The Mentor ideally walks alongside the student for the entire three years of the student's time in the Confirmation Ministry. The relationship that is formed continues beyond those three years in a natural way. Additional information on activities is found below.

Please RSVP to Sarah Loberg.

Confirmation Class Egg Stuffing and Egg Dying party!

Wednesday night, April 12, 7:00-8:00 p.m.: Bring a dozen hard boiled eggs to dye and a bag of small individually wrapped candy. We will dye the real eggs and put the candy in plastic eggs for the Easter Egg hunt on April 15. It's always a good time!

No Sunday School on Easter Sunday

There will be no PreK–5th Grade, Confirmation, High School, or Adult Forum classes on Easter Sunday, April 16.

Save the date: Confirmation End-Of-Year Party

Sunday, May 7, 9:10–10:10 a.m.: Confirmation Party! Our class on this last Sunday morning of our Sunday School year will be a party! Games, snacks, and a ton of fun! You won't want to miss this special morning of wrapping up the year!

Confirmation Camp: incoming 6th–outgoing 8th graders!

Confirmation Intensive Camp at Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp is June 25–30, 2017. This year, our theme will be "Jesus: The Passion" where we will experience Jesus' life, ministry, trials, death, and resurrection in a way only possible at camp. We are "Saved to Serve" so there will also be an afternoon of service at the camp. This is the second year in a three-year cycle (the other years are "The Exodus" and "The Early Church"). Deaconess Kristen will be taking the group up the mountain on Sunday and staying there until mid-week—when Pastor Mark will arrive and complete the week with the group. He will bring them down the mountain back to BLC.

Confirmation Intensive Camp is open to incoming 5th–8th graders. The cost is $425 before April 1 (BLC deadline). BLC will cover $100 of that cost, after you turn in the participant release form (available from Deaconess Sarah Loberg) and a $100 deposit (payable to BLC—either by check or online; if online, choose youth activities/write in Confirmation Camp and name of camper). Deaconess Sarah will register our group and add the BLC contribution to each of the camper's accounts. This way, you will only receive balance due notifications of $225. These notifications will come directly from the camp. After April 15 (camp deadline), the price goes up to $445.

Contact Deaconess Sarah Loberg with any questions.

Confirmation Soup Angels

Our confirmation students are angels...Soup Angels! One of the community outreach programs we support at Bethlehem is HOPE Ministries. HOPE reaches out to the homeless population in Longmont in a number of ways, but a key focus is to provide hot meals every night of the year. The volunteers who provide the meal are called Soup Angels.

Our confirmands recently cooked up a huge batch of delicious corn chowder—enough to provide 60 meals for HOPE. Thanks to:

  • Brandi and Ally Curtis for doing all the shopping
  • Kyle Curtis, one of our eighth grade confirmands, for serving as the chef. (Kyle loves to cook and did a great job in organizing this meal and the preparation needed.)
  • All the confirmands who helped with the food prep
  • Bob Lee, Trudi Boaz and Pastor Peterson for supervising the work
  • Trudi Boaz, Jordan Trujillo and Justin Dirkes for packing up and delivering the meals the next day to HOPE

The confirmands will again be Soup Angels in the spring.
