Middle school and Confirmation

Middle school and confirmation: grades 6-8

ff WritingHandBible 1Confirmation Ministry at Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a three year ministry program for youth in grades 6, 7 and 8. Over the three years, they will study the Ten Commandments, the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer, the Old and New Testaments of scripture and cover topics relevant to living a life of faith in current times. Students meet on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings throughout the school year. Additionally, each Confirmation Student is assigned an adult Mentor who walks alongside them for the entire three year period. The Rite of Affirmation of Baptism is traditionally celebrated in worship at the end of the 8th grade year for those who wish to affirm their faith.

Confirmation 2018/19

Confirmation classes for our 6th–8th graders meet weekly on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. We will be doing things just a little different this year with Deaconess Kristen, Pastor Keith, and Bob Lee all leading the Wednesday night class covering the Old Testament and some catechism. Deaconess Kristen will be leading the Sunday morning class, which will involve service projects, reflection conversations, and fellowship activities. Plans are in place for another full year of Confirmation ministry!

Upcoming Confirmation Schedule:
We are currently studying the Ten Commandments.

Check out these great special guest speakers that will be coming to our class!

  • January 16: The fourth commandment is "Honor your father and mother." Honoring is built on trust, and trust is built on communication. Therefore, please mark your calendar to have one or more parents (or grandparents, if that is how your household works) accompany your student to class. Amanda Dawson, a member of our congregation and a licensed family therapist, will lead us through some tips and tricks of parent–teen communication. It will be a very informative and helpful evening!
  • January 23: The fifth commandment is "Thou shall not kill." But what if you are a police officer, and your line of duty calls for it? How do you reconcile your job with your faith? Longmont Deputy Chief Jeff Satur will join us for this challenging class. Officer Satur is a member of First Lutheran Church.
  • January 30: The sixth commandment is "Thou shall not commit adultery." Many young people are experiencing brokenness in their family unit. What are the struggles and how can we support each other in the midst of it all? Guest speaker TBD.

2018/19 Mentor Ministry

The Mentor Ministry of Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a cross-generation ministry in which one adult in the congregation is assigned to one confirmation student. This adult agrees to pray for that student daily, contact them weekly and get together monthly. Monthly events are coordinated by Deaconess Kristen. Additional times of getting together outside of programed activities are on student-mentor basis and agreed on by the student's parents. The Mentor ideally walks alongside the student for the entire three years of the student's time in the Confirmation Ministry. The relationship that is formed continues beyond those three years in a natural way. Additional information on activities is found below.

Mentor Ministry

Sunday, January 13, 11:15 a.m.–1:45 p.m.: Mentor Movie Day. Mentor and Mentee pairs should discuss what is the best movie snack and plan to bring that snack to share with the rest of the class (one sharing size snack per pair). We will vote on what movie to watch (choices TBD) and vote on the best snack. There will be prizes, so bring your best snack!

Upcoming events

Middle School Service Project

Complementary to our Wednesday night catechetical program, Sunday morning confirmation class for 2018/19 will be a four Sunday rotation: coffee shop caring conversation (at local coffee shops), video-based topical discussion, fellowship and games, and service projects. These rotations are based on research that suggests that the four keys that help faith grow include:

  • Caring conversation
  • Devotions
  • Rituals and traditions
  • Service

Additionally, as a church community, we need to help kids connect their passions to areas of need in the world. This is how we help young people discover their vocation and support them in finding meaning and action through faith.

Confirmation Camp, June 23–28, 2019: The Exodus

Current 5th–8th graders, you won’t want to miss this exciting week of camp at Sky Ranch on June 23–28 with other confirmation groups from the Rocky Mountain Synod! We will explore the story of the Exodus in ways you never imagined. There will be lots of surprises along the way! If you would like to join us, please email Deaconess Kristen.
The total cost of camp will depend on the council approved annual budget. The price (including the $100 deposit) is $440, but Bethlehem Lutheran Church will off–set as much as possible of the cost of camp. The amount is TBD until the first part of 2019. However, if financial reasons are the only thing keeping you from sending your kiddo to camp, please contact Deaconess Kristen as scholarships are available.
