Middle school and Confirmation

Middle school and confirmation: grades 6-8

ff WritingHandBible 1Confirmation Ministry at Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a three year ministry program for youth in grades 6, 7 and 8. Over the three years, they will study the Ten Commandments, the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer, the Old and New Testaments of scripture and cover topics relevant to living a life of faith in current times. Students meet on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings throughout the school year. Additionally, each Confirmation Student is assigned an adult Mentor who walks alongside them for the entire three year period. The Rite of Affirmation of Baptism is traditionally celebrated in worship at the end of the 8th grade year for those who wish to affirm their faith.

Confirmation 2018/19

Confirmation classes for our 6th–8th graders meet weekly on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. We will be doing things just a little different this year with Deaconess Kristen, Pastor Keith, and Bob Lee all leading the Wednesday night class covering the Old Testament and some catechism. Deaconess Kristen will be leading the Sunday morning class, which will involve service projects, reflection conversations, and fellowship activities. Plans are in place for another full year of Confirmation ministry!

October Confirmation Classes

Confirmation classes for October will be held on Wednesday nights (October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31) 7:00–8:00 p.m.in the youth room! Plan to join us for learning, community, and snacks! ON OCT 31, PLEASE DRESS UP AS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER FROM GENESIS 6:9-9:17. Look it up!

2018/19 Mentor Ministry

The Mentor Ministry of Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a cross-generation ministry in which one adult in the congregation is assigned to one confirmation student. This adult agrees to pray for that student daily, contact them weekly and get together monthly. Monthly events are coordinated by Deaconess Kristen. Additional times of getting together outside of programed activities are on student-mentor basis and agreed on by the student's parents. The Mentor ideally walks alongside the student for the entire three years of the student's time in the Confirmation Ministry. The relationship that is formed continues beyond those three years in a natural way. Additional information on activities is found below.

Upcoming events

Middle School Service Project

Complementary to our Wednesday night catechetical program, Sunday morning confirmation class for 2018/19 will be a four Sunday rotation: coffee shop caring conversation (at local coffee shops), video-based topical discussion, fellowship and games, and service projects. These rotations are based on research that suggests that the four keys that help faith grow include:

  • Caring conversation
  • Devotions
  • Rituals and traditions
  • Service

Additionally, as a church community, we need to help kids connect their passions to areas of need in the world. This is how we help young people discover their vocation and support them in finding meaning and action through faith. Based on input from our students, the first service project we undertake will be to benefit the Longmont Humane Society. Starting October 7, we will be collecting items from the Longmont Humane Society’s wish list, which includes:

  • Canned ground dog food
  • Canned quality puppy food
  • Soft Dog Treats
  • Dog kibble "small bites" for feeding small dogs and providing enrichment for large dogs (Must contain No Red Dye)
  • Large dog knuckle bones
  • Milkbone biscuits, small or medium size only URGENT NEED*
  • Creamy peanut butter for dog treats
  • Large blankets (for dogs) sized to fit into a standard washing machine URGENT NEED*
  • Canned Fish & Potato dog food URGENT NEED*
  • Cat Harness & Leash combos for taking shelter cats for a walk
  • Heavy Duty Leashes, 6 foot
  • NON-clumping clay cat litter
  • Durable dog toys (not stuffed)
  • Digital Thermometers
  • Electric Dog Clippers
  • Guinea Pig/Rabbit toys
  • Kuranda Beds
  • Small branches from willow or fruit trees for our rabbits to nibble on. No exposure to pesticides, please.

Thank you for your support as we connect kids passions with the needs of the world!

Confirmation Class Goes to the Humane Society

Confirmation class is headed to the Humane Society on Sunday, November 4 at 9:15 a.m. to drop off the items we collected and get a tour of the facility. Please be in the youth room NO LATER than 9:15 a.m. with your online liability waiver signed. Thank you to the congregation and all who supported this project!

Confirmation Camp, June 23–28, 2019: The Exodus

Current 5th–8th graders, you won’t want to miss this exciting week of camp at Sky Ranch on June 23–28 with other confirmation groups from the Rocky Mountain Synod! We will explore the story of the Exodus in ways you never imagined. There will be lots of surprises along the way! Please reserve your spot by October 15 by giving Deaconess Kristen your $100 deposit (payable to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or online on the donation page under Youth Activities).
The total cost of camp will depend on the council approved annual budget. The price (including the $100 deposit) is $435, but Bethlehem Lutheran Church will off–set as much as possible of the cost of camp. The amount is TBD until the first part of 2019. However, if financial reasons are the only thing keeping you from sending your kiddo to camp, please contact Deaconess Kristen as scholarships are available.
